Cool stars, like the Sun, have magnetic activity generated in their interior by the dynamo effect due to the convective movements and to the differential rotation.

Even if we understand the solar magnetism well (which, for instance, creates the sunspots on the surface), the details of the mechanism responsible for these phenomena is still unknown.

The passage of dark spots on the line of sight during the rotation of the star yields brightness variations. CoRoT will measure these variations (amplitude, period) with a high precision, on a large number of stars, allowing us to draw up statistics.
