Detection of two faint companions of the star HIP6856.
Copyright : VLT / NACO 2002

The simplest idea would be to make an image of a planetary system where the planet would appear as a faint point close to the star. Unfortunately, the planet is so faint compared to the star and so close to it (angularly) that the observer is dazzled by the star. Therefore, we must resort to indirect detection methods.
